Online and street prostitution differ

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Ron Weitzer, a sociologist at George Washington University, who has written extensively on the criminology of prostitution.

This is more what the public needs to hear rather all the nonsense about pimps, trafficking and victims of private adults like the DD case etc.

Men seeking indoor prostitution are looking for different things than men on the street. On the street its all about quick sex little conversation, after the negotiation for sex and than they get down to business.

Men seeking indoor prostitution tend to be looking for more than just sex. They are looking for companionship, an emotional connection and with some romance.

Indoor resembles therapy - indoor includes escort agencies, massage parlors, independent providers and brothels.

Most indoor dates last at least an hour having much more time for the customer and provider to relate on other levels than just sexual. So I like to think of those indoor encounters as paid dates or relationships not just paid sex as you find on the street.

So there is a big difference between the kind of person in terms of what the customer is looking for indoors, although some customers indoors are looking for just sex. But many of them - and you can tell this by going to web sites, interviews and research that has been done, most indoor customers are looking for much more than just a simple sexual encounter.

Indoor prostitution does not have a substantial effect on the community, the worker tends not to be drug addicted and more educated.

With these differences we need different policies for each.

Dave notes, I wish it would be mentioned this is why indoor is legal in almost all the world except the U.S. while street solicitation is not because it is such a public nuisance vs in private consenting adults that has no real negative effects worldwide where it is legal...again between consenting adults in private.
