Report on City Council Hearing 2 of 3 Nov 2 1998

This meeting had a huge turnout. I was surprised since the South Mountain area location is not anywhere near any swing club or SOB.

But the result was the same as my detailed review of meeting #1 at City Council Chambers.

Only one "Community person" was in favor of the Cities proposals since he thought it was about time the City enforced "a code of conduct to fit in with neighborhoods".

Every other speaker pointed out there was no need for the proposals, the city hasn't presented one fact that makes sense why new laws are needed, and all the proposals represent are one group trying to impose their values on others.

No evidence of any medical concern, in fact having both swing clubs and SOB's reduce the health concerns since no sex at SOB's and very low STD risk at swing clubs with responsible, sexually knowledgeable adults.

No evidence of the "related crime" problem the city claims exists. One person talked to the Phoenix police and found much more crime reports from 7-11's and Circle K's then at any swing clubs or SOB. There simply is no crime problem evidence contrary to what the city claims at any swing club or SOB.

Clearly no "Community impact" since all the clubs and SOB's are zoned in industrial areas and unless grandfathered none are anywhere near any residential area.

One Mormon, Boy Scout leader, Church activist after introducing his background said, "I bet you think I support the cities proposals. Well your wrong." He went on to present a freedom of choice argument totally supporting the swing clubs and SOBs.

Chairman Nelson asked that those who had presented their views previously not say the same thing again and priority would be given those that had not spoken at the prior meeting. Since I had already given my "sermon" at the previous meeting I wasn't going to speak. However, when things slowed a bit I was recognized. I summarized the key issues of no evidence in the City's own reports to make the claims made regarding the need for new laws etc. Instead of my "prepared statements" I was "off the cuff". I have no idea what I said, but it must have been good since I got lots of favorable comments afterwards! See http://www.libchrist.com/swing/phxnewlaw.html for my "sermon" from the last meeting.

On to final hearing November 16th at the Deer Valley Community Center, 2001 W Wahalla Lane.

So far the Citizens have spoken in a loud united voice saying "Don't' impose your unneeded regulations on us. They are unjustified and it is clear their only purpose is harassment of adults whose sexual interests and desire for sexual freedom are not to be regulated by government! If you don't like swing clubs or SOB's don't go, but don't deny us our freedom to make that choice of clubs or what activities we can enjoy."

Now the question is will the City hear its citizens or just pass these immoral laws against the wishes of the Citizens whose input was requested at these public hearings.
